The book presents the biography of the Bahian musician Manuel Tranquilino Bastos (1850-1935), who left a remarkable collection of more than 700 compositions and created six philharmonic bands. In addition to being an artist, he was a man involved in the fight against slavery and was also a spiritist, homeopath and vegetarian leader. Journalist, he wrote in favor of abolitionism and against religious intolerance and racism. In his articles, he anticipated current topics such as the defense of the environment and human rights by a few decades. The book presents the life and work of Tranquilino Bastos, while describing the economic, social, political and cultural context of the city of Cachoeira, in Recôncavo Baiano, between the 19th and 20th centuries.
