A long time has passed since the cult of the Ibejis (twin divinities and protectors of children) left the sacred space of Candomblé temples, took to the city streets, and entered the homes of the rich and poor, believers and non-believers alike. The “Caruru of Saints Cosmas and Damian” has become a sacred institution celebrated by all Brazilians. Feasts for the “child saints” in Bahia, especially in the Recôncavo region, have taken on unique proportions and characteristics, which are often incomprehensible to outsiders.
