Courage to create: the living and symbolic memory of Goya Lopes

Black woman, artist, designer, businesswoman, author, researcher, Brazilian, Bahian and tireless worker.

Just like the almost infinite combinations of his thousands of prints, Goya Lopes' potential is inexhaustible.

The short film Goya Lopes - Courage to create was born with an almost impossible mission: to portray Goya's life and cultural contribution in just 27 minutes. The work is designed and written by Goya Lopes, Isabella Rosado Nunes and Kin Guerra, sound direction by André Magalhães and direction by Kin Guerra.

"Courage to create” is an achievement of the companies Goya Lopes Design Brasileiro, Mina Comunicação e Arte and Solisluna Design Editora, with the cooperation of the Pedro Calmon Foundation, an organization of the Secretariat of Culture of the State of Bahia.

Different traits of the artist

The short documentary presents the audience with countless paths to explore, each one leading to a piece of Goya's life and legacy still under construction.

We are taken through great moments in the artist's formation: her father's encouragement; the stay in France; the School of Fine Arts; design studies in Italy; Brazilianness in São Paulo; the shops in the historic center of Salvador; exhibitions around the world; among many other guiding threads of its creation.

In printmaking, Goya found his language to portray and sow Afro-Brazilian ancestry and culture, where his full creative potential was discovered. With bright colors and detailed compositions of African and indigenous elements; The artist's pieces print the country's cultural richness on the fabric.

Through testimonies from experts in the field, such as curator Adélia Borges, fashion activist Carol Barreto, cultural manager Zulu Araújo and designer Enéas Guerra, the film shows the achievements of his artistic career and the grandeur and uniqueness of his work.

Journalist and design curator Adélia Borges highlights the power of Goya's work and the relevance of his creations and productions and everything they represent.

“The work of Bahian Goya Lopes in creating an Afro-Brazilian print is of utmost importance. The African diaspora has generated enormous wealth for the entire world, but some are better known than others. The music – from jazz to reggae and samba – is very well known, in its multiple sounds. But not the print. At a global level, we continue to worship factories like Vlisco, which creates so-called African fabrics in the Netherlands, and not multiple voices like Goya's. But the recognition of his trajectory still falls far short of his contribution.”

The cinema premiere was marked by meetings and a lot of emotion

The pre-launch of the documentary took place on June 30th , at the Cine Metha Glauber Rocha cultural complex , located in the historic center of Salvador. The event for guests brought together friends, collaborators and lovers of the artist.

On the occasion, filmmaker Kin Guerra expressed his joy with the completion of the project: “Goya is a jewel of Bahia and our jewels need to be preserved and valued with pride and dedication. I am pure gratitude for being involved in this network of cooperation that exists around Goya. Long live Goya, long live the art of Bahia.”

Zulu Araújo, general director of the Pedro Calmon Foundation, recognized the importance of the work in the conservation of Bahian and Brazilian cultural heritage. “Today is the day to be grateful. This documentary, in times as dark as the ones we are living in, is a way of thanking all those who have had the courage to create, to harvest, to love and, above all, to resist”

At the end, Goya Lopes also expressed his gratitude to the public. "The people here, every face present, contributed to my growth. I want to thank you for this wonderful work, it was hard, it was difficult, but we did it.”

Online launch and conversation with guests

The online launch of the documentary took place on July 21, at 7 pm. The screening of the film was followed by a conversation between Goya Lopes, writer Conceição Evaristo, filmmaker Silvio Tendler and artist and curator Ayrson Heráclito. The chat was mediated by Isabella Nunes and Kin Guerra.

The exciting meeting explored the conception of the documentary and its collaborative production; the experiences of ancestry; the significance and influence of Goya's work and the importance of his art in the empowerment of black youth.

In his statement, Ayrson Heráclito hailed Goya's creation and his legacy for Brazilian visual culture. "As a professor, artist, Bahian and activist of Brazilian and Northeastern art, it is an honor to live in a country with a person as talented and important as Goya and to follow this current moment in his work, which is occupying other spaces that are not just reserved for the design. Spaces of this magnitude that can encompass all of your skills as a creator of image and an identity for anti-racist causes in Brazil, issues of ancestry and issues relating to Afro-Brazilian culture."

Conceição Evaristo raised the importance of publicizing the artist’s story. “The entire time I watched the documentary, I thought a lot about black youth, Bahian youth, about how their personal story brings great positivity. After so many sad stories, your story is a story that must be told. This documentary needs to reach schools, in the outskirts, because it is a message of hope and at the same time a demand for rights. What we lack is opportunity, that’s all.”

Filmmaker Silvio Tendler praised the documentary's direction and its portrayal of the artist. “I wouldn't cut a frame from the film, nothing is too much, nothing is exaggerated. He gave me the possibility to understand why I like Goya's art so much. Each frame of the documentary shows the greatness of the work and Goya's personality. Kin deconstructs a hidden side. We know Goya through her collections, but Goya the creator, Goya the executor, is a beautiful thing."
